The Ins and Outs of Compression Garments

Compression garments are one of the most important tools in lymphoedema management, yet they’re often misunderstood or underestimated. A well-fitted garment can make a world of difference by improving comfort, reducing swelling, and helping you stay active and independent.

Here’s what you need to know about why proper fitting matters, how often to replace them, and how the Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme (MASS) can help.

Why Compression Garments Matter

Compression garments apply graduated pressure to help the lymphatic and venous systems move fluid back toward the heart. They’re essential for:

  • Reducing and controlling swelling

  • Supporting skin health and comfort

  • Preventing fluid from refilling after manual lymphatic drainage

  • Improving mobility and endurance

Wearing the right compression garment can mean the difference between feeling heavy and restricted versus supported and comfortable throughout the day.

Why Professional Fitting Is So Important

Compression garments are not one-size-fits-all. Even small differences in limb shape, tissue softness, or swelling pattern can completely change how a garment fits and functions.

An accredited lymphoedema practitioner will:

  • Take precise limb measurements

  • Assess your skin condition, mobility, and tolerance

  • Determine the type of fabric and compression level of your garment

A garment that’s too tight, too loose, or fitted incorrectly can cause pain, skin damage, or ineffective treatment.

Off-the-Shelf vs Custom-Made

Many people assume an “off-the-shelf” compression stocking from a pharmacy will do the job, but for most people with lymphoedema, that’s not the case.

Off-the-shelf garments:

  • Are designed for standard limb shapes

  • May work for mild swelling or prevention

  • Often lack options for shorter or fuller limbs, uneven shapes (common with lymphoedema), or sensitive skin

Custom-made garments:

  • Are made to precisely match your limb measurements

  • Provide consistent pressure over irregular contours

  • Are usually flat-knit, meaning they’re more durable and supportive

  • Can be tailored for hands, feet, or body areas that don’t fit standard sizing

For most clients with lymphoedema, custom-made garments are recommended for best results.

How Often Do Compression Garments Need Replacing?

Compression garments stretch and lose effectiveness over time, even if they still look fine.

The Australasian Lymphology Association recommends:

  • New garments every 6 months for daily wear

  • Reassessment at each replacement to check for limb changes or garment fatigue

Wearing worn-out garments can reduce effectiveness and allow swelling to increase again.

Regular reviews also help your practitioner identify changes in limb shape early — before they become more difficult to manage.

The Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme (MASS)

In Queensland, eligible clients can access financial assistance for compression garments through the Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme (MASS).

MASS provides funding for custom or off-the-shelf compression garments for people with lymphoedema who meet clinical criteria. Your accredited lymphoedema practitioner can help you complete the required forms and clinical documentation.

You may be eligible if you:

  • Have a diagnosis of lymphoedema or chronic oedema

  • Live in Queensland

  • Hold a Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card

Funding typically covers up to two garments per limb every six months, depending on need.

A Word on Lipoedema

While the MASS scheme currently focuses on lymphoedema, people with lipoedema can also benefit from compression therapy. Properly fitted garments help reduce pain, heaviness, and tissue sensitivity, but these must still be fitted professionally to ensure safety and comfort.
